Sensitive Skin

Sensitive skin refers to a broad range of skin conditions, including eczema, psoriasis, dry skin, rosacea, and allergic reactions to external influences. Because it is so broad, sensitive skin often appears as a symptom of an underlying skin condition. Skin sensitivity and irritation may be triggered by internal factors (such as genetic predisposition), external factors (such as reactions to certain skincare products or environmental changes), or a combination of both.

Causes of Sensitive Skin

As mentioned above, sensitive skin can be inherited. You are more likely to develop sensitive skin if you or your family have a history of conditions such as eczema, allergic contact dermatitis, acne, or psoriasis. These skin conditions can weaken the skin barrier, reduce its ability to cope with environmental stressors, and make skin more prone to irritation. Strengthening the skin barrier can therefore be an effective way to soothe irritated skin.

In addition to genetic factors, sensitive skin can react to specific physical or chemical triggers, including cosmetics, detergents and soaps. Prolonged or excessive exposure to sun, wind and sudden weather changes can also easily affect sensitive skin, as its barrier function is more easily compromised by such external factors.

Two essential tips for caring for sensitive skin

Although there are many ways to protect sensitive skin from irritation and allergic reactions, two essential practices are especially important because they directly support the skin barrier — the first line of defence against skin problems.

Gentle cleansing

Gentle, thorough cleansing is important for sensitive skin, as a weakened skin barrier is more easily irritated. Aggressive cleansing products can further irritate the skin and cause more harm than good. Identifying and avoiding such products is essential in sensitive skin care — sensitive skin benefits from mild formulations that cleanse thoroughly while respecting the skin's natural flora.

Moisturisation

Moisture is a critical component of the skin barrier, and a lack of it can further compromise barrier integrity in sensitive skin. Sensitive skin also often struggles to retain moisture, making it more prone to dehydration. Moisturisers containing essential barrier components such as lipids, ceramides and free fatty acids can help support barrier function and soothe irritated skin. Integrating such products into a sensitive skincare routine helps restore comfort and reduce irritation.

With this in mind, Coresatin® Panthenol Barrier Recovery Cream is formulated to gently support the skin barrier while providing hydration — optimised for daily sensitive skincare.
