Dry Skin

People of all ages can experience dry, itchy skin at certain times in their lives. Although older adults are generally more prone to dry skin, younger people can also experience dryness and itching in areas such as the face, elbows, lower legs, and forearms. Dry skin is an uncomfortable condition characterised by flaking, itching, and cracks. In some cases, it may also be accompanied by visible skin rashes that cause significant discomfort.

Skin dryness occurs when there is not enough water stored in the outermost layer of the skin. A correct moisture balance can be disrupted by a variety of external and internal factors. To name a few, low humidity, overheating, frequent handwashing with harsh soaps, a history of eczema, and a genetic predisposition can all impair the skin’s ability to retain adequate moisture. Common symptoms of dry skin include rashes, itching (sometimes intense), dry patches, small scales, and an urge to scratch. Among these, itching is often the most bothersome symptom, as it can trigger a vicious cycle of itch–scratch–rash that is difficult to break. An effective way to break this cycle is to trap sufficient moisture in the skin to relieve itching and prevent further irritation.

Dry, itchy skin is often not a serious problem; however, if it worsens, it can lead to complications such as infections and dermatitis. The reason is simple: moisture is one of the essential components of the skin barrier. When the skin is unable to retain enough moisture, the integrity of the skin barrier is compromised, leaving the skin defenceless against pathogens. Once this protective mechanism is disrupted, bacteria and other microorganisms can penetrate deeper into the skin layers, potentially causing infections and conditions such as dermatitis or eczema. For this reason, the use of moisturisers that rehydrate the skin and help it retain water is considered the first line of defence against dry, itchy skin and its associated complications.

How to choose the best moisturiser for dry skin

Although different skin types have different moisturising needs, some general principles can help when choosing an effective moisturiser for dry skin. The best moisturiser for dry skin should be chosen based on individual skin type, its ability to support skin barrier integrity, and its effectiveness in maintaining an adequate moisture level.

In this respect, Coresatin® Aloe Vera Severe Dry Skin Relief Cream was developed for very dry, moisture-depleted skin. It provides long-lasting hydration, supports the integrity of the skin barrier and helps the skin feel comfortable through the day.
