Atopic Dermatitis
Patients suffering from atopic dermatitis typically experience red, dry skin rashes accompanied by intense itching. Redness, severe dryness, and especially persistent itchiness that leads to an “itch–scratch” cycle are common symptoms of eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis. Although the exact cause of atopic dermatitis is not yet fully understood, a combination of genetic and environmental factors is believed to play a significant role. For example, individuals with a family history of atopic dermatitis are generally more susceptible to external triggers than those without a genetic predisposition.
If atopic dermatitis is influenced by both hereditary and environmental factors, does that mean there is nothing that can be done? In fact, there are several effective approaches to soothing and calming irritated, itchy atopic skin. To better understand these approaches, it is helpful to first consider how the condition typically develops. Atopic dermatitis is a chronic skin condition that may improve or worsen over time, but characteristic symptoms such as dry, itchy skin often recur. In this condition, an overreactive immune system responds excessively to certain triggers, leading to the visible symptoms of atopic dermatitis. To help ease eczema symptoms, in addition to other supportive measures, two key strategies should be emphasised: prevention and skin barrier conditioning.
It is important to remember that the skin serves as a natural defence against external factors such as changing environmental conditions and everyday exposures, including detergents, harsh soaps, and cleansers. Symptoms of atopic dermatitis—particularly dryness and itching—can damage the skin barrier, allowing pathogens to penetrate the skin more easily. As a result, various skin complications may develop, including inflammation, infections, and other related conditions. To support a compromised skin barrier, the skin should first be gently sanitised for an appropriate period to help reduce the risk of secondary infections. Following this, skin barrier integrity should be reinforced with essential lipids and adequate moisture to promote recovery and renewal.
Coresatin® Sea Buckthorn Relief Cream for Redness and Flaking is designed to gently sanitise the skin while supporting the repair of a damaged skin barrier. In this context, sea buckthorn, as a natural ingredient, may contribute to skin barrier repair due to its content of linoleic acid and ceramides. It can also help the skin retain moisture, supporting barrier function and helping to reduce common eczema-related symptoms such as itching and dryness.
